Sometimes the advances in science sound like science fiction to us laymen, but the truth is that many of them are already a reality. This has happened in the field of transplants. We had heard about transplants of the marrow, heart, cornea, kidney ... but the medical community is in luck because the first baby has been born as a result of a uterus transplant.

It has happened in Sweden where a 36-year-old woman who was born without a uterus has been able to give birth to a baby. How is it possible? She received a uterus transplant in 2013. The donor was a 61-year-old family friend who had already reached menopause. One year after the transplant, researchers at the University of Gothenburg transferred an embryo to the new uterus. The embryo had been previously fertilized through in vitro fertilization (IVF) since the woman did have her ovaries intact and could produce oocytes. Just three months later the woman was pregnant.

The uterus fulfilled its function throughout the pregnancy and the pregnancy was carried out normally despite some very mild rejection episodes that are normal, according to experts. The first baby born from a uterus transplant was born at 31 weeks' gestation by cesarean section and weighed 1.7 kilos.

At the beginning of the experience, 9 women were transplanted, although in some cases the uterus had to be removed due to an infection, however, another seven women are carrying out their pregnancy at this time, so more deliveries are expected soon.

This project that allows women who were born without a uterus or those who lost a uterus due to cancer to become mothers began in 1999, but has not borne fruit until now. It has been a 15-year wait that has ended with a happy ending.

This advance represents a great hope for all those mothers and fathers who cannot have a baby and a great success for medical science.
